Ludhiana, October 29

An awareness talk was organised at Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, on Thursday to mark the World Stroke Day. The day is observed to highlight increasing rates of stroke, its seriousness, raise awareness of the prevention and treatment and ensure comprehensive support and care for survivors.

Dr Alok Jain, senior consultant neurologist, Fortis Hospital, told about the symptoms and prevention tips of the stroke. They discussed about various risk factors for stroke and measures to prevent stroke in daily life.

Dr Jain said stroke or brain attack, affects approximately 15 million people worldwide every year. Many of these die and many more are left permanently paralysed, disabled or dependant on their families. It’s the second most common cause of death globally. Unfortunately, many people remain unaware of the signs and symptoms to look out for, therefore putting their health at risk.

“A stroke occurs when an artery or blood vessel becomes blocked or ruptures, restricting blood flow to the brain. This leads to brain cell death, and, subsequently, brain damage. How a person is affected by stroke depends on where in the brain the stroke occurs and how much of the brain is affected,” he said. — TNS
