Crackdown on power thieves

21 cases detected, penalty of Rs13.70 lakh imposed

Stepping up the drive against power theft and uauthorised use of electricity, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) conducted intensive checking of electricity connections in Estate Division under the supervision of the Deputy Chief Engineer, City West Circle, where 21 cases of theft and 19 others of UE (unauthorised extension/overload) were detected. The defaulting consumers were served with demand notices for a penalty of Rs 13.70 lakh.

The PSPCL officials said during mass raids conducted at Himmat Nagar and Bazigar Mohalla that fell under Miller Ganj subdivision, Dhandari Kalan, Makkar Colony, Guru Nanak Colony, Mahadev Nagar and Samrat Colony that fell under Giaspura subdivision and Ganpati Enclave under Sahnewal subdivision for checking of energy meters and electrical installations. In all, 484 connections were checked.

The consumers found stealing electricity through kundi connections or bypassing meters would also face criminal proceedings under the Electricity Act and FIRs were being lodged in this regard with the anti-power theft police station, the officials added.
