Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS, PRTC contractual staff protest, shut bus stand for 2 hours

Passengers faced inconvenience as the members of the Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS and PRTC Contract Workers’ Union, Punjab, closed the bus stand for two hours to mark their protest against the Transport Department and the Punjab Government for not releasing their salaries and delay in fulfilling their pending demands.

Threaten to stop plying of buses

Shamsher Singh, State General Secretary of the Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS and PRTC Contract Workers’ Union, Punjab, said if their salaries were still not released, the contractual employees would stop plying of buses in the state from 12 pm onwards on June 23. The employees would park buses on the road to block the traffic movement across the state.

As the bus stand was closed, buses halted on the main road, leading to traffic jams. A large number of passengers were seen waiting for the resumption of the bus service at the bus stand.

Shamsher Singh, State General Secretary of the union, said the bus stands across the state were closed to mark the protest by the contractual employees. The protesting members said the contractual workers were still struggling for their rights even during the regime of the AAP government in the state. Now, they were being forced to protest even to get their salaries released.

The protesters said bus drivers and conductors were working under mental stress and their families faced financial problems. They raised the demand before the higher authorities and the Transport Minister, but their salaries had not been released so far.

Shamsher Singh said if their salaries were still not released, the contractual employees would stop plying of buses in the state from 12 pm onwards on June 23. The employees would park buses on the road to block the traffic movement across the state. They would gherao the residences of ministers till the salaries of employees were not released.
