Ludhiana, March 3

The Ludhiana police claimed to have busted a gang that had obtained GST refunds by creating a fake firm in the name of a city resident. The fraud came to light when the GST Department issued a notice to a resident regarding fake GST returns obtained by his company. Later, the victim lodged a police complaint and the investigation led to the busting of the racket.

The suspects have been identified as Hardeep Singh, a resident of Vishwakarma Colony, Sukhdev Singh of Harkrishan Nagar, Ranjit Singh Babbar of Gill Road, Sumit Kumar of Labour Colony, Harpal Singh and an unidentified person.

The complainant, Amandeep Singh, who had lodged a police complaint in the case in July last year, said the suspects had misused his Aadhaar card, PAN card number and photograph to obtain a GST number from the Delhi GST Department. By forging his identification, they set up a fake firm, Nanak Enterprises.

The gang members had also issued counterfeit bills by using other firms and claimed GST refunds, hence caused loss worth crores to the GST Department.

The complainant said last year when he got to know about the fake firm in his name, he lodged a police complaint and after a long probe, a case was registered by the police.

The police said after registering a case, further probe was launched in the case and role of several other persons who could be part of the racket would also face action.

A case under Sections 419, 420, 120-B, 465, 468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code, Sections 66C and 66 D of the Information Technology (IT) Act registered against the suspects.
