Commuters dread dark spots of Ludhiana

Commuters are a harried lot as most street lights in several parts of the city are non-functional, especially at Southern Bypass, Dugri Road, Ishmeet Singh Road, Ward Number 2 areas.

The local residents have urged the civic body to take measures to ensure repair and maintenance of the street lights at the earliest.

Meanwhile, shopkeepers complained that the civic body had failed to ensure repair of defunct street lights on Malhar Road and its adjoining street of Gurdev Nagar.

A resident of Dugri, Sanjeev Gupta, said: “The street lights on Dugri Road near the police station have been lying non-functional for the past few weeks. The MC should take necessary action to ensure their repair.”

Paramjit Singh, president of Malhar Road Shopkeepers Association, said: “I have been complaining to the officials concerned about non-functional street lights on Malhar Road for the past few weeks, but to no avail. The street lights in the adjoining street of Gurdev Nagar are also lying defunct for a long time.”

Councillor from Ward 2 Gurmail Singh Jajji said the project to install new LED lights in the ward areas was already delayed. He said: “The LED street lights have been installed in around 40% area of Ward Number 2. Even a number of newly installed street lights have not been made functional yet and residents keep complaining to me.” Executive Engineer Surinder Singh said the street lights in the remaining parts of Ward No. 2 would be installed soon.

Executive Engineer Balwinder Singh said they would conduct a survey in the areas of Zone D and if street lights were found to be non-functional, necessary steps would be taken.
