Ludhiana, December 2

As a number of roads were recently recarpeted or reconstructed in the city, residents demand from the MC to ensure collection of samples for testing the quality of the roads.

After roads of KVM Colony got damaged within days after carpeting, there is a need to conduct timely checking of the roads in the city, demanded residents. Sources in the MC said that samples were not collected from the recently carpeted roads at KVM Colony.

Satish Thaman, a senior citizen, said, “The MC should make a special strategy to conduct on spot checking of the under-construction roads. The material should be used as per the norms for carpeting or construction of roads. The MC should ensure timely collection of road samples and get these tested to bring transparency. The samples should also be collected when the work is completed by the contractor.”

Thaman, member, Ludhiana West Grievances Redressal Committee, said, “I have written to the Chief Minister and Local Bodies Minister in this regard. As people pay taxes, the civic body should provide better infrastructure in the city.”

Kuldeep Singh Khaira, member, Vigilant Citizens’ Forum, Ludhiana, said, “All newly-carpeted or constructed roads should be tested. The MC should get the samples of roads tested from both government agency and a third party agency. It will help to bring transparency in the working of MC’s B&R branch and contractors.”

Notably, a number of road samples collected earlier this year had failed quality test. MC’s Additional Commissioner Rishipal Singh said they are already taking samples from various roads in the city for testing. He said that the drive will continue in future too.
