Ludhiana, May 1

To avoid flooding or overflowing of water, the authorities concerned need to strengthen the banks of Buddha Nullah. The residents wanted the authorities, including the MC and others concerned, to ensure desilting of the Buddha Nullah and strengthening of its banks in their respective jurisdiction before the rainy season.

As monsoon is just two months away, it will be beneficial if the MC starts strengthening Buddha Nullah banks now. There is also need to remove the silt, solid waste and weed from the nullah in the city as well as in the areas on the periphery. Desilting work should start at the earliest.

A portion of Buddha Nullah’s bank had washed away near Peeru Banda area after heavy rainfall in 2019. Besides, its highly polluted water had overflown from different points due to floods in Sutlej River or when extra water was released in the drain last year. The polluted water of Buddha Nullah had also entered the fields, damaging crops in some villages, including Gaunspur, during floods last year.

There is no stoppage on dumping of solid and other untreated waste into Buddha Nullah while huge amount is spent on desilting of Buddha Nullah every year. “As monsoons are just two months away, it would be beneficial if MC starts the strengthening of Buddha Nullah banks from now. There is also need to remove the silt, solid waste and weed from the nullah in the city as well as from outside city areas. The desilting work should started at the earliest too,” said, Gaganpreet Singh, a resident.

A Congress leader, Parminder Mehta said the flow of waste water in the Buddha Nullah is low at present due to the curfew situation. “Many factories are lying closed due to which the waste from these factories is not being discharged into the drain. The MC should take benefit of the situation and start the desilting work at the earliest. Besides, there is a dire need to strengthen the banks of nullah to avoid flooding in nearby areas”, he said.

It is required to mention that the MC has allocated funds of Rs 2 crore for desilting of the Nullah in city areas for financial year 2020-21. MC’s Superintending Engineer, Rajinder Singh said they had written to the drainage department to start the desilting work in the city areas at the earliest.
