Basketball Championship: Dismal day for Chandigarh players

It was a dismal day for Chandigarh players as they lost both their matches (men and women) in the ongoing 71st Senior North Zone Basketball Championship being held at Guru Nanak Stadium here on Wednesday. In the women’s section, Delhi defeated Chandigarh comprehensively 86-40 and in the men’s group, Chandigarh went down fighting against Delhi 52-73.

International player, Delhi skipper Raspreet Kaur led from the front to steer her side stitch up the issue easily. She accounted for 23 points, which made all the difference between two sides. However, in the men’s section, Chandigarh waged a spirited battle against Delhi. They pressed hard to put up resistance, but Delhi men managed to keep composure at crucial moments, which turned the tide in latter’s favour. For the winning side, Rachit was the highest scorer, who chipped in with 17 points. In another high scoring match (men) played between Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), the former came out triumphant 100-72. Lalit scored 16 points for Haryana and played a pivot role for his side’s well deserved victory.

In the women’s section too, J&K suffered defeat against Himachal Pradesh (39-64) in which Ananya dropped in 17 points for the winners.

In the matches, played late last evening, Delhi beat J&K 93-70 in the men’s section while in the women’s category, Haryana survived a scare against Chandigarh before wrapping up the cliff hanger 54-48.

Before the start of today’s proceedings, players, coaches, officials and organisers observed two minutes silence to express their gratitude to the sacrifice of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur on his martyrdom day.—OC
