Air quality dips to poor in Ludhiana

AQI 249 on Mon evening; 267 stubble burning cases in district on Sunday

When stubble burning cases are being reported from various parts of the state amid the Covid pandemic, the air quality dropped to poor category again in the city on Monday.

The air quality index was recorded 249 at 6 pm on Monday in Ludhiana. If the AQI falls between 201 and 300, it is in poor category and its possible health impact will be breathing discomfort to most people on prolonged exposure.

Meanwhile, 3,560 stubble burning cases were reported in the state on Sunday. The maximum cases of 593 from Sangrur, while 267 cases from Ludhiana district were reported on Sunday.

As many as 33,165 cases have been reported in the state between September 21, 2020, and November 1. The district administration is running awareness campaigns among farmers regarding ill-effects of burning paddy straw/stubble. Despite ban and awareness drive being conducted by the government, the stubble burning cases were increasing.

Residents were a harried a lot when the stubble was put on fire in fields. The burning of paddy stubble leads to health hazards and causes air pollution. A number of residents complained of breathing problems and irritation in eyes due to stubble burning.
