Ludhiana, December 29

Even after six years, the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana, has failed to get the Unique Identification (UID) number plates fixed on mostly properties in the city.

The MC has got UID number plates installed on around just 40,000 properties till date while such plates are yet to be fixed on over three lakh properties.

The MC was supposed to complete a survey of all properties under Geographic Information System (GIS) project by March 2014 but it was delayed. After completion of survey, the civic body was also supposed to ensure fixing UID number plates on all the properties in the city but the project of fixing plates has not been completed till date. The work to install UID number plates was stalled earlier this year.

The civic body had earlier assigned the work to a private firm regarding the survey and fixing of UID number plates. The firm had got UID numbers mentioned (with blue coloured marker) on wall or main gate of a number of properties in different areas but, with passing of time, these numbers have also faded from many properties. However, the UID number plates have not been fixed on properties in most parts of the city as per information.

Notably, the residents of several areas in the city have been facing troubles for getting their proper residence proofs and inconvenience to get postal mails timely in absence of property/house numbers. Tanvir Singh Dhaliwal, a former councillor, said, “It was an important project of the MC but it has not been completed till date. Number plates have been fixed on buildings in just some areas of the city. If the UID numbers plates were fixed on all properties in the right manner, it would be beneficial for the residents as well as for MC.”

MC’s Superintendent Vivek Verma said the UID numbers have been allotted in 35 out of 37 blocks in the city. “The plates were fixed on around 40,000 properties out of around 3.70 lakh identified properties. This project was later stalled as the work to fix the plates on properties is to be done under the smart city mission”, he said.

Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu said that the UID number plates will be fixed on the properties in the city under a smart city mission project now.
