55.425 kg of opium seized in six months

The Ludhiana (Rural) police has emerged as the leading district with record quantity of 55.425-kg of seized opium being deposited with the government for medicinal use during the past six months.

The destroyed contrabands included 9.819-kg heroin, 4.051-kg poppy husk and over 7.30 lakh tablets of habit forming pharmaceutical preparations.

Perusal of records revealed that a total of 237 persons were arrested by cops posted at various police stations falling under jurisdiction of Ludhiana (Rural) police district since July 18, 2019. Huge quantities of drug and narcotics, including 13.600-gm opium, 5.904-kg heroin, 1,138-kg poppy husk, over 9 lakh habit-forming tablets and 2.6 kg of intoxication powder were seized during this period.The police also seized 104 vehicles during this period used in various crimes besides recovering drug money worth around Rs 30 lakh. — OC
