Ludhiana, December 4

Five persons succumbed to Covid, while 100 tested positive for the virus in the district today.

Those who lost their lives were all males and in the age group between 40 and 70.

Yesterday, one person who lost his life belonged to Chandigarh, but was counted in Ludhiana district. Today, after five more deaths, the total number of people who succumbed to the virus from the district was 913.

A 73-year-old male from Haibowal Kalan lost his life due to the virus. A 61-year-old man from Nurpur Bet village who was also hypertensive and a 63-year-old male from Haibowal Kalan who had co-morbidity of hypertension and coronary artery disease and was admitted to the DMCH breathed his last today.

A 51-year-old man and a 40-year-old man from Chowni Mohalla and Himmat Singh Nagar, respectively, died today. Both were suffering from diabetes.

Out of the total 100 those who tested positive included 44 people who were referred from flu corner, 28 from OPDs and three health care workers, among others.

Having shown a decline in the daily Covid cases after a peak in September, India has reversed the trend over the past few weeks.

Public health experts have said the pandemic may evolve given the approaching winter and a slew of festivals, low testing and learn-to-live-with-the-virus attitude. Keeping in mind the above scenario, a community awareness programme regarding the second wave of Covid was held at the Field Ganj centre and Prem Nagar of the Department of Community Medicine, CMC, Ludhiana.

The team which organised this community awareness programme included Dr Gurshan Singh Gill, assistant professor and medical interns of the Department of Community Medicine, CMC, Ludhiana.

The key messages given in this programme to local shopkeepers and community were that until vaccine was available, certain preventive measures such as wearing masks, social distancing and frequent hand washing were effective tools to counter and prevent this infection.

An audio clip was also prepared by the Department of Community Medicine, CMC, Ludhiana, in Punjabi which enumerated essential protocols and effective ways to prevent the infection such as wearing of masks, social distancing, frequent hand washing and contacting nearest health facility if a person had fever or breathlessness. People and health workers were also motivated to get tested, keeping in mind the rising numbers of coronavirus cases.
