Ludhiana, July 9

It was a pleasant day in the city after it received 2.4 mm rainfall. The maximum temperature dropped by 1.4°C and the minimum by 1.2°C.

Dr Pavneet Kaur Kingra, head, Department of Climate Change and Agricultural Meteorology, said the weather was expected to remain cloudy with the possibility of rain over Ludhiana and its adjoining areas.

“The rainfall is also beneficial for crops as now, it is the paddy season and this crop needs a lot of water,” she said.

Experts from the PAU suggested that the cotton crop must not be allowed to suffer from water stress during the flowering and fruiting stages.

“Eradicate weeds such as kanghibuti, peelibuti and puthkanda growing on cotton field bunds, waste lands, roadside and irrigation channels/canals to avoid further spread of whitefly to cotton field,” suggested an expert.

Chandigarh Road waterlogged again

After rain lashed the city on Saturday, water accumulated on a stretch of Chandigarh Road again, leaving commuters and residents to face inconvenience. Sewerage overflowed after the rain, resulting in water accumulation on the stretch of Chandigarh Road Ludhiana, near Sector 39.

A resident of Urban Estate, Sector 39, on Chandigarh Road, Premjeet Singh, said he had written complaints to the civic body and the government a number of times but to no avail.

“Whenever it rains, sewers start overflowing and water accumulates on the highway outside our house. The government and the MC must pay attention to get the problem resolved,” he said.
