126 turn up on second day of sports trials

Ludhiana, February 13

On the second day of the selection trials conducted by the Punjab Sports Department, 126 more players (boys and girls) turned up, taking the total number to 568. These aspirants attended the trials for induction in sports wings (schools) being run at different venues across the Ludhiana district.

The players had been asked to appear for the selection trials in 18 sports disciplines — athletics, archery, basketball, badminton, boxing, cycling, football, gymnastics, hockey, handball, judo, kho-kho, lawn tennis, softball, rifle shooting, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.

Ravinder Singh, District Sports Officer (DSO), said the trials for archery were organised at GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar, whereas in hockey, handball and cycling were on the Punjab Agricultural University campus, and in the remaining 14 disciplines, arrangements were made at Guru Nanak Stadium.

The DSO said today, 34 players got themselves registered in archery, 36 in volleyball, 33 in weightlifting, 15 in basketball, besides four each in boxing and athletics.

The selected players will be enrolled in the sports wings and given Rs 100 per player daily and Rs 200 to each player per day as diet money, besides free coaching. — OC
