The coronavirus has not only locked us indoors, but snatched away renowned artistes. Here is a tribute to some who could not survive its onslaught

Idris Alba, Prince Charles, Boris Johnson… the stars, the royalty and those ruling… they all came down, but came out stronger on the other side. Unfortunately, several didn’t. While we are still struggling to make peace with celebs we lost during corona — Kobe Bryant, Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor — there are many we lost due to corona. Not a few minutes of silence, but a few words of remembrance for the celebs who didn’t make it out of Covid-19.

Couldn’t make it

The news of Nashville star Allen Garfield testing positive for corona didn’t really break the internet, which is why sudden news of his giving into the covid-19 complications, after a few days of hospitalisation, came in as a guilt-laden shocker. The character artiste of the 70’s Hollywood died at the age of 80.

As they’d have you believe by now, those at a certain spectrum of age are the least likely to survive, but we still didn’t expect coronavirus to get the better of Andrew Jack. We hoped the superstar, like his body of work, The Last Jedi, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, would emerge victorious at the last minute. Unfortunately, he couldn’t see his wife during his final days because she had been quarantined in Australia, but the actor’s agent said she had been, “Inundated with tributes to the acting world’s brightest, clearest voices.”

All of a sudden

Well, he wasn’t the only powerful performer to have been taken away by the coronavirus. All those who’ve grown up swinging to the anthem I love Rock and Roll know all too well about the loss of an idol — American vocalist Alan Merrill, the man behind several hits by The Arrows, who was rushed to the hospital after 10 days of braving the symptoms in self-quarantine. While the family got to say bye, his daughter Laura Merrill, in an interview, paid a befitting tribute, “It’s just been a big shock to the entire family and you know you don’t think that the coronavirus is going to happen to you. You hear about it and it’s something that people joke about online, and it’s real.” Her social media post is what can be extended to each and every person who succumbed to corona, “It wasn’t supposed to be this way. You had so many more years to live.”

The one who left us a bit too soon has been the 52-year-old Adam Schlesinger. The Stacy’s Mom and Hey Julie songwriter held a Grammy and Emmy award in his life, which was cut short by Corona.

Waiting for a comeback

While closer home in Mumbai, usually we’ve only had to deal with celebs flouting rules of quarantine — either Sara Ali Khan not wearing a mask or Kanika Kapoor hiding travel history and attending crowded gatherings.

Those who’ve seen James Cameron’s Aliens know that actor Jay Benedict is no more. The American actor, also known for The Dark Knight Rises, died in the first week of April, at the age of 68, because of complications brought about by the virus. Tributes poured in and alongside the worry, ‘Was it ever going to stop?’ Apparently, it isn’t going to spare anyone.

Italy’s master shoe-maker Sergio Rossi had been hospitalised for a few days, before the 84-year-old legendary designer died due to coronavirus. As the factories of the brand are restarting, reads an Instagram story on the legend’s official brand page, “The comeback is always stronger than the setback.”
