Model turned Punjabi actor Sakshi Maggo, who debuted with director Anees Bazmee’s Welcome Back, is a known name in Punjabi film industry. Her dream of becoming a part of Pollywood became a reality with Jaan Toh Pyara as a lead actor. Sakshi is all set to rock with director Smeep Kang’s new film Welcome Bhua Ji opposite talented Binnu Dhillon.

  • With no godfather or industry background, how did you land in the industry?

When I was a fresher I got a call from Firoz A Nadiadwala’s office, they took my screen test and then after a year they called and selected me for a role in Welcome Back.

  • You started your career as a model, how has the transition to acting been?

I gave it my all — I gave many auditions, attended meetings for films and shoots. It somehow depends on luck as well whether one gets a role or not. It sure was challenging but I enjoyed the process.

  • How has been your experience working with reputed stars in Welcome Back?

It was amazing to work with talented actors like John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Shruti Haasan, Dimple Kapadia, Paresh Rawal and Naseeruddin Shah. I would love to work with them again.

  • Jaan Toh Pyara was your first Punjabi film. How was the response?

Yes, that was my first small budget Punjabi film. The filmmaker spent one crore on the project and the film did business of six crores. It was a money spinner at the box office.

  • In your opinion, what sets producer Rohit Kumar’s Welcome Bhua Ji apart from other films in Pollywood?

It is different because it has a powerful script. We have completed almost 40 per cent shoot.

  • What are the other projects that you are working on?

There are two more films in the pipeline. One more good thing is that I got a big break in a Telugu film as well.

  • How has the experience been shooting with Binnu Dhillon in Welcome Bhua Ji?

He is superb. I just love him and now he is my friend as well. He is so kind, so amazing and a superb actor.

  • Are the roles that you play always the kind you are seeking?

Frankly speaking not. For my debut film Jaan Toh Pyara, it was my first big break in Pollywood. So whatever it is I am happy that it came my way.

  • What music do you listen to and who is your favourite Punjabi singer?

I like Sufi and romantic songs. B Praak is my favourite singer.

  • Do you like cooking and which one is your favorite Punjabi dish?

I love cooking and I make halwa very well and my favourite dish is saag. I love saag and kadi chawal.

  • Your take on nepotism?

I don’t worry too much about nepotism because anyone who has money can do anything. You can promote yourself and you can make a film for yourself. It is all about a game of money actually so I don’t believe in nepotism.
