There’s a need for taking the conversation from ‘I am okay’ to ‘Oh, it’s all right if you are not’. And in order to do so, we need artistes to initiate a dialogue on mental health and the stigma around it. If one such effort was made by Netflix’s trending Korean show It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, then music producer Marshmello and singer Demi Lovato’s latest single OK Not To BE OK takes it a step forward. Stressing the role of a friend in the hour of need, this song is an uplifting number in many ways.

Demi is back. She took a break after the 2018 drug overdose incident to focus on her health. The release date of the song coincided with Global Suicide Prevention Day on September 10 and it has garnered more than eight million views. For the video, they partnered with Hope for the Day organisation that works to prevent suicide.

In the video, confronting their past helps Marshmello and Demi Lovato find peace. The video is directed by Hannah Lux Davis.

Demi has shared on Instagram a long post after the release, and it says, “Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Since a young age I’ve dealt with suicidal thoughts and depression. I’ve been very vocal in raising the awareness about mental health because it is possible to see the light when you start working on yourself... I’ve had many days where I’ve struggled but please let this song be an anthem to anyone who needs it right now. You can get through whatever it is you’re going through… I’m here for you always, you are not alone and I love you @hopefortheday is an incredible non-profit organization that provides education and resources to better our mental health. @marshmellomusic and I are so thankful to have their support and resources. My hope is that you’ll read these slides and share them with your friends and family. Take care of yourself, and listen to your loved ones. Remember, It’s Ok Not To Be Ok.”

A new anthem

With a song like FRIENDS, Marshmello had given us a friendship anthem, and now this song is a new anthem for mental health. Diksha, employee, Ludhiana

Good team

I believe both the artistes make for a good team and the song itself is a proof. I am glad that we are getting to see more of Demi Lovato. I enjoyed the lyrics more than the music. — Rishab, businessman, Ludhiana
