It’s so unfair!

Gautam Vig played an artist in his debut television show Naamkarann, which shot him to fame. Now, after a year, he once again gets to play a creative person in Colors’ newly launched show Pinjra Khoobsurti Ka.

The show is about Mayura, played by Riya Sharma, who wants to be appreciated for her talent rather than her beauty. She longs to be with someone who would love her for what she is. And that’s when Piyush, played by Gautam, makes an entry. He is a guy who finds beauty in stuff what the world deems ugly or unworthy of attention. About his role, Gautam says, “Piyush is a guy who looks at the world differently. He has the capability of turning mundane things into work of art, just like Nek Chand, who made the Rock Garden out of waste materials.”

Gautam has also played a character with grey shades in Ishq Subhan Allah. He says, “I got to learn a lot from my earlier shows and those experiences have made me the actor that I am today.”

But it was not an easy journey for Gautam to make his mark in the world of acting. In fact, what went against him was his fair complexion. “In earlier days, when I was training to be an actor and was attending workshops, I wanted to do theatre. But, the casting people for theatre never took me in their plays because of my fair skin. They said whenever there would be a role of a foreigner, they would contact me.”

Other than TV shows, Gautam has recently completed a web series. He says, “The show deals with music mafia and is based on five people from the music industry. It has 25 songs which is a big thing for any web series.”

On the personal front, his life has been full of struggles—losing weight, doing modelling, then shifting to Canada and then back to Mumbai to pursue his dreams. He says, “I wanted to be in the fashion and entertainment industry. Without telling my parents, I left my job, made a trip to Mumbai and did an acting course in Anupam Kher’s Actor Prepares back in 2011. But after spending six months in Mumbai, though I was sure acting was my true calling, I realised I wasn’t ready, financially or professionally. So, I left after three months only to come back permanently after a few years. And the first big break was Naamkarann, which was a learning curve for me.”
