Female-centric scripts are the order of the day in B-town. While actresses like Madhuri Dixit, Raveena Tandon and Sonali Bendre have made a comeback on OTT with them, there are others who prefer to essay the role of real-life sportspersons on screen. Here’s a look at upcoming female-centric sports films and web series set to release in 2022.

Cricket fever

Actress Taapsee Pannu will be seen in the biopic of famous cricketer Mithali Raj titled Shabaash Mithu, which is releasing on July 15. Mithali Raj is the former test and ODI captain of the India women’s national team.

Jahnvi Kapoor in Mr and Mrs Mahi

On the other hand, Anushka Sharma will be making a comeback on screen with the story of fast bowler Jhulan Goswami, in a film titled Chakda ’Xpress, for Netflix.

Rasika Dugal gears up for Spike

Also, Karan Johar has announced a film, Mr and Mrs Mahi, in which Jahnvi Kapoor’s first look is in a cricket helmet. Jahnvi shared a series of pictures while announcing the project and captioned it as, “Cricket camp #MrandMrsMahi.” Karan Johar also shared the news, “Best of luck to the entire team of #MrAndMrsMahi for starting the first innings! Knock it out of the park.”

Right inspiration

There is speculation about badminton player PV Sindhu’s biopic with Deepika Padukone playing her role, after the actress and Sindhu posted pictures of an intense game of badminton.

Then there are also some sports dramas in the pipeline, like Spike, which will be a web series inspired by volleyball. Rasika Dugal will play the lead in the project. In January, the actress landed in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, to commence the shoot.

Mary Kom

Biopics In the recent past

Priyanka Chopra acted in a biopic titled Mary Kom , based on world- famous woman boxer Mary Kom, while her cousin, Parineeti Chopra, played badminton star Saina Nehwal in the biopic Saina (2021). The 2020 film Panga saw not one but two actresses, Kangana Ranaut and Richa Chadha, playing kabaddi players.

Saand Ki Aankh

When talking about two female leads, Saand Ki Aankh comes to the mind. Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar played real-life sharpshooters, Prakashi and Chandro Tomar, respectively, in the film.

In Rashmi Rocket, Taapsee played an athlete who had to undergo a gender test while in Badhaai Do Bhumi Pednekar played a PT teacher in school. In January, 2022, a Telugu sports-comedy film, Good Luck Sakhi, by director Nagesh Kukunoor, saw Keerthy Suresh in the lead role.
