Kaul, Baltej rock Gujarat on Day 1

Punjab pacers Siddarth Kaul (4/57) and Baltej Singh (4/62) had Gujarat on the ropes at 119/5 on the first day of their Group A Ranji Trophy match, but No. 3 Bhargav Merai (130) resisted and combined with the tail to salvage the innings. At stumps, Gujarat were 277/9, with the No. 10 and 11 batsmen at the crease. Merai added 95 for the sixth wicket with Piyush Chawla, who made 42.

Rishi Dhawan, who usually bats in the middle order, opened the innings with Prashant Chopra in the absence of regular opener Priyanshu Khanduri.
