Kaul, Baltej rock Gujarat on Day 1

Punjab pacers Siddarth Kaul (4/57) and Baltej Singh (4/62) had Gujarat on the ropes at 119/5 on the first day of their Group A Ranji Trophy match, but No. 3 Bhargav Merai (130) resisted and combined with the tail to salvage the innings. At stumps, Gujarat were 277/9, with the No. 10 and 11 batsmen at the crease. Merai added 95 for the sixth wicket with Piyush Chawla, who made 42.

Dharamsala: Akash Vashist’s 86 helped Himachal Pradesh post 314/5 against Baroda on Day 1 of their Group A Ranji Trophy match. Rishi Dhawan, who usually bats in the middle order, opened the innings with Prashant Chopra in the absence of regular opener Priyanshu Khanduri. Chopra contributed 56 runs while Amit Kumar was batting on 55 at stumps. — TNS
