The complex process of admission abroad simplified

Show comments

Securing a degree from a college/university abroad is a dream that many a youngster nurture in their quest for a bright career and life prospects. But understanding the intricacies as well as the procedure for securing a seat in universities abroad is not a cake walk and several students give up on their dream because of their inability to manouvre through the admission process. It is this aspect that Soundarya Balasubramani takes up in her debut book Admitted: The Missing Guide to Craft a Winning Application & Study Abroad.

With a master’s degree from Columbia University, New York and a Gold Medal from NIT Trichy up her sleeve, the author offers an informative guide for graduates and professionals aspiring to pursue higher education abroad. Unlike available literature and checklists in this domain, the book draws valuable insights from the author’s personal stories, experiences, and data from reliable sources to provide critical information on every part of the journey: crafting a resume, writing a statement of purpose, preparing for competitive exams (GRE, IELTS, TOEFL), picking the right university, preparing for interviews, applying for scholarships, and more. It also lays bare lesser-known information about student loans and visas, post getting an admit.

The book features infographics, actionable frameworks, testimonials from academicians and students to prompt introspection and inspire future students to make an informed career decision.

Every step in the process is described in standalone chapters with actionable frameworks, backed by trusted research, with a strong personal narrative. Soundarya weaves in concepts from other domains such as history, psychology, and behavioral economics to make it an informative and engaging read. With the help of illustrations and visual elements, Admitted is as much a treat to your eyes, as it is to your mind.

Announcing the release author Soundarya Balasubramani said, “Admitted did not begin as a book. Seven months ago, I wanted to create a short, 10-page guide to help students who wanted to study abroad. As I began researching though, I soon found out the lack of (and need of) a comprehensive guide on this topic. But instead of writing a book that instructed the reader on exactly what to do, my team and I took a different approach. We used the virtue of graphic design, mental models from other domains, testimonials from past graduates, and my own stories to write and design a book that teaches the reader how to think instead. Admitted is not just about helping you get your dream admit. It's also about preparing you for the next phase in your life".

The pandemic certainly put a dent on many students’ dreams. But once things stabilise, universities abroad will be even more welcoming to receiving international students, given how important they are to the universities’ lifeline and country’s economy. Hence, I urge students to treat this time as more runway to prepare; to take up online courses, gain more certifications, intern at startups, and work on side-projects. Make yourself more valuable and interesting. There is no reason for you to stop, because the world did so.”

100% of profits from the sales will go towards helping the underprivileged get access to education.
