Jalandhar, June 23

Highway robbers looted a family of Rs 40,000 and gold and diamond ornaments on the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway on Thursday.

The victims were the kin of Congress councillor Sherry Chadha and were on a Punjab tour from Kolkata. Chadha said the incident occurred close to the CRPF Complex in Sarai Khas. "My sister and her in-laws were returning from the Golden Temple when a tyre of their car got punctured. While the driver had stopped the car to change the tyre, three youths riding a Yamaha bike came near the car and offered help. In return of help, they started seeking money from them," said Chadha.

He said: "My relatives gave them Rs 200 but they started asking for more money. They then snatched the car keys and aimed a gun at them. They took cash and jewellery from the passengers."

The Kartarpur police swung into action immediately after the incident. "One of the three accused in the crime has been identified on the basis of a CCTV footage procured from near the spot. We will soon be able to nab them," said the DSP.
