Jalandhar, Gurdaspur teams in final

The Khalsa football clubs of Gurdaspur and Jalandhar have entered the final of the 1st Sikh Football Cup being organised by the Khalsa Football Club (Khalsa FC), in collaboration with the Global Sikh Sports Federation.

Announcing the results, Khalsa FC president Harjit Singh Grewal said Khalsa FC Gurdaspur and Khalsa FC Jalandhar had drubbed teams of Barnala and Roop Nagar, respectively.

The semifinal matches were played at Sant Baba Bhag Singh University, Jalandhar, on Thursday. Now the winning teams would lock their horns in the match to be held in Chandigarh on February 8.

Khalsa FC secretary general and director (sports) Dr Pritam Singh said the semi-final matches were inaugurated by Sant Satpal Singh, Sant Dilavar Singh, Vice-Chancellor Dr Jatinder Singh Bal and American Sikh Council president Kirpal Singh Nijjer. A gatka performance was also staged on the occasion.

Sant Satpal Singh lauded the efforts made by Khalsa FC to hold the tournament, which, he said, would go a long way in weaning away youngsters from drugs and connect them to the Sikh heritage and promote Sikh identity, besides inculcating the sports spirit amongst them. The Vice-Chancellor said it was the need of the hour to motivate youngsters towards sports. The Akal Takht officiating Jathedar, Giani Harpreet Singh, gave prizes to the winners.
