Nawanshahr, February 7

The Nawanshahr police claimed to have busted a gang involved in interstate trade of illegal arms and arrested one of its members.

The suspect has been identified as Balkaran Singh, alias Rai, a resident of Garhshankar in Hoshiarpur. The police also recovered 10 country-made pistols from his possession.

SSP Akhil Chaudhary said during preliminary investigation, it came to fore that Arun Kumar, alias Mani, from Una, Himachal Pradesh, who is lodged in the Central Jail, Ludhiana, and involved in several cases, was operating this gang.

“The gang was also involved in supplying illegal weapons in different parts of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Arun was also involved in crime in parts of Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, SAS Nagar, Jalandhar, Roopnagar, Una and areas of Haryana,” the SSP said.

“Balkaran, who was involved in drug trafficking cases, came in contact with Arun in the jail. Kumar then directed him to bring the consignment of illegal weapons from Madhya Pradesh and supply it in different parts of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. For this, Arun gave money to Balkaran through PayTm and the remaining amount was to be given after the delivery. These recovered weapons were to be used for various criminal activities,” police officials said.

After getting information, they acted swiftly and seized the consignment of illegal weapons. Efforts were on to arrest other members of the gang, the police said.
