In 30 days, rash driving claims seven lives in Nawanshahr

A woman identified as Usha Rani was killed in a road mishap yesterday when an auto-rickshaw she was travelling in was allegedly hit by a speeding Scorpio (four-wheeler) in Nawanshahr.

Complainant Madan Lal from Sadar Banga in his statement to the police said he and his wife Usha Rani were going to their relatives. He said, “My nephew was to come with us. So, I and my nephew rode on a bike while my wife boarded an auto-rickshaw. I was following the auto-rickshaw on the bike. Suddenly, a Scorpio coming at a high speed drove past us and hit the auto-rickshaw. The three-wheeler overturned due to the impact of collision.”

The complainant said he could hear screams of his wife and other passengers in the auto-rickshaw. He said, “Passersby helped us take the injured to a hospital. My wife was seriously hurt and was declared brought dead at the hospital.”

Madan Lal had noted down the Scorpio registration number which he gave to the police. He said a woman was driving the four-wheeler. According to unconfirmed reports, the Scorpio driver has been arrested by the police. A case under Sections 279 (Rash driving) and 304A of the IPC has been registered against the suspect. This is the fifth such accident in the past 30 days.

Earlier, two brothers from Nawanshahr were killed after the bike they were riding was hit by a Fortuner SUV from behind.

On January 3, a woman identified as Kamaljit Kaur (40) died while her daughter Jasmeet Kaur from Balachaur suffered serious injuries after the two-wheeler they were riding was hit by a car. As per information, the car driver, who belonged to Gurdaspur, fled the spot after the accident. Later, the police arrested the car driver.

On January 2, two migrant workers lost their lives after the bike they were riding was hit by a car in Nawanshahr. The deceased were identified as Saroj Kumar and Manish Kumar. On January 16, Lakhwinder Singh (40), a resident of Sadar Banga, succumbed to his injuries after the motorcycle he was driving was hit by a tractor-trailer.
