A farmer by profession, Satnam Singh could not watch the match and came to know of the win only when he started receiving calls from relatives and journalists. He said he also used to play hockey but never played professionally, but never thought his daughter would make it to the Olympics.

Pardeep Kaur, elder sister of Gurjit, is a hockey coach at Sansarpur. “Since childhood I have not seen her interested in anything other than sports,” said Pardeep.

Gurjit studied in Jalandhar for two years after she completed her 12th. Talking about her sister, Pardeep said she talked to Gurjit early in the morning and wished her good luck. “I don’t have the words to explain how proud I am to see my little sister achieving this position,” she said.
