Accusing the state of adopting anti-education policies, members of the local unit of the Government Teachers’ Union burnt an effigy of the government here on Tuesday.

On the occasion, the protesting teachers also took out a protest rally. Addressing the protesters, union leaders accused the government of harassing teachers on the pretext of forming a policy for smart schools.

They said the state government was taking the credit for the work being done by teachers, who spent money on their own or with the help of people.

The union leaders said by keeping the posts of teacher vacant in government schools, the state government was affecting the study of students.

They demanded regularisation of services of contractual teachers, doing away with non-academic work, formation of the rationalisation policy in consultation with the teacher orgnisations and equal facilities for all school students.

Apart from this, they demanded the withdrawal of chargesheet against president of the Government Teachers’ Union Sukhvinder Singh Chahal, cancellation of termination of teachers at the earliest.

The protesting teachers threatened to intensify their stir if their demands were not met.
