Hoshiarpur, February 15

Rajya Sabha member Balbir Singh Seechewal on Thursday inspected the work of setting up the regulator in the canal at Simbli village in Garhshankar. A drain was being dug to release 200 cusecs of water into Chitti Bein.

Seechewal said Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has started a massive campaign to save water for future generations, conserve groundwater and the flora and fauna of the state. While taking stock of the work, he said starting from Simbli village, this drain will reach Chitti Bein via Chuhadpur, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Kulam, Langodaan, etc. He said releasing the water from the canal would improve the groundwater level.

Expressing satisfaction over the ongoing work, Seechewal said during last year’s floods, the entire area was submerged in water because the drainage of water was only 70 to 100 cusecs. As a result, the flood waters remained accumulated and all the crops of farmers were damaged due to being submerged in water.

He said the project started by the Drainage Department would drain out 200 cusecs of water and in the coming time, the project would provide many benefits. He said Punjab is the land of religious gurus and saints, who showed us the path to conserve the environment.

He said following in the footsteps of the religious gurus, the state government is working on a war footing to conserve natural resources of the state. He said the state government has taken massive steps to make maximum use of canal water to save groundwater.
