Jalandhar, February 14

Cyber fraudsters have created a fake Facebook profile of Jalandhar Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma and targeted residents in Ludhiana and Jalandhar.

Several residents reported that they received friend request on Facebook from a profile in the name of Swapan Sharma. After they accepted the request, the fraudsters engaged in conversation and sought their mobile numbers.

Reports indicate that the suspects posing as Police Commissioner claimed to have an acquaintance named Santosh Kumar, purportedly an officer in the CRPF. They told people that Kumar’s duty had been reassigned, prompting him to sell his furniture in pristine condition. They asked people to purchase the furniture or recommend it to others. Some residents reported that the suspects also sought financial assistance.

Officials from the cyber cell said investigations were on to apprehend the suspects. “People are advised to verify the authenticity of messages requesting financial assistance,” the officials said.
