Five of a family, including 2 infants, die in accident in Jalandhar

Five persons of a family were killed in a gruesome road accident that took place near Hamira here on Monday. In the accident, two babies along with their mothers and grandmother lost their lives.

The victims belong to a family in Ludhiana. Seven members of the family were returning to Ludhiana after paying obeisance at Darbar Sahib in Amritsar when the accident happened.

Around 6.30 this morning, the City Honda car in which they were travelling rammed into a stationary truck on the highway near Hamira village, killing four persons on the spot. The fifth one, an infant, was referred to the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after being hospitalised.

The deceased have been identified as Sarabjit Kaur (56), her daughter Manpreet Kaur (34), her daughter-in-law Amandeep Kaur (25), Amandeep’s six-month-old son Gurfateh and Manpreet’s eight-month-old son Parmeet Singh.

The car was being driven by deceased Sarabjit Kaur’s son and Amandeep’s husband Tejinder Singh, who was seriously injured in the accident. The seventh person in the car, Manpreet’s son Manveer Singh (7) escaped unhurt.

Tejinder Singh, who was initially admitted to the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, had sustained serious injuries. Later, he was moved to DMC, Ludhiana, by his family.

The car was damaged beyond recognition. Such was the impact of the accident that the car bonnet was reduced to smithereens while the rear of the parked truck was partially damaged.

Harjit Singh, SHO, Subhanpur police station, said, “The family was on their way back to Ludhiana when the incident happened. Sarabjit Kaur and her daughter, daughter-in-law, and her maternal and paternal grandsons lost their lives in the accident. Her son Tejinder Singh received injuries in his arm, face, head and was taken by the family to Ludhiana where he is under treatment at DMC. The bodies have been handed over to the family after a postmortem.”
