Jalandhar, February 21

The Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) meeting will be held on February 24 at the Municipal Corporation. The meeting will be attended by Senior Deputy Mayor Surinder Kaur, Deputy Mayor Harsimranjit Singh Bunty and members of the committee councillors Gian Chand and Gurwinderpal Singh Bunty Nilkanth.

In one of the agendas, it is mentioned that a meeting was held with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) monitoring committee.

“In the meeting, strict instructions were given that various sewer drains were being emptied into the Kala Sanghian drain which was ultimately affecting the quality of the drain water. Hence, it was necessary that these sewer lines must be connected directly to the main sewer line. For the project, the MC has estimated that Rs 4.93 lakh will be spent. A contractor is being considered for the same, who would complete the work in around Rs 4.88 lakh,” the agenda reads.

The issue will be discussed in detail during the meeting.

The drain covers Gadaipur, Focal Point, Kalia Colony, Sanjay Gandhi Colony, Baba Balak Nath Nagar, Seth Hukum Chand Colony, Kapurthala Road and Grover Colony, till the end of the corporation limit. With a foul smell emanating from the drain that is filled with dirt, garbage, filth, sludge, chemicals, factory waste, it is not easy to stand at the spot for long. There are thousands of residents who have been living on both sides of the drain since decades.

One of the residents said in the late 80s, the water in the drain was clear. “And now it has become a breeding ground for every problem,” others rued, adding that they were left to live in hell-like conditions. The residents of the area are also worried about their coming generations.
