The girl, daughter of Gurdial Singh Matharoo, who had gone to Canada about three years ago for pursuing higher studies, was reportedly killed by a 18-year-old youth whom she had married. The youth had killed himself with the same gun after killing Prabhleen, the Canadian police had said. Their bodies were found in a rented apartment in Surrey. The father of the girl said he knew about their relationship and marriage.

Since the girl could not marry in Surrey because of a minimum age requirement for boy to be 19, they had gone to Calgary for a court marriage.

The boy bought the weapon on the day of the crime. Both worked in a coffee house in Surrey and were planning to visit India in January.
