Jalandhar, June 23

In order to prevent mosquito breeding and check the spread of dengue in the district, Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori directed the Municipal Corporation, officials of the Health Department and Executive Officers of the Municipal Councils to initiate concerted efforts to contain the dengue outbreak. The DC also asked them to start issuing challans to those who fail to check breeding of dengue-causing mosquito larvae on the premises of their homes or buildings.

Symptoms

The symptoms of the disease include high grade fever above 102°F, headache, pain in eyes, general body pains, vomiting, skin rashes, which must be monitored for 7 to 10 days by medical experts

Dos

  • Always keep overhead tanks properly covered
  • Drain out water from coolers and scrub these dry once a week
  • In case of fever, get your blood examined at the earliest
  • Take full treatment if infected

Don’ts

  • Do not allow water to stagnate in and around your house
  • Do not throw discarded containers, tyres, pitchers and pots on the rooftop

Chairing a meeting with various departments, the DC said the administration would make all out efforts to control the spread of dengue in urban and rural areas. He said people must be educated about possible breeding grounds of mosquitoes, including water and flower pots, jars, tins, bottles, refrigerators, coolers, tyres, water containers and bird feeders.

Thori said joint teams, comprising of MC, Health Department and others local civic bodies, must be constituted to hold door-to-door survey and check the places of larvae breeding.

The DC further told them to undertake inspection of government offices to ensure that these places must not become breeding ground of mosquitoes. He also solicited wholehearted support of citizens to take suitable steps to prevent mosquito breeding in their homes. He said the district administration was firmly committed to tackling the menace to ensure good health of the residents. Thori said the spread of dengue could be contained through proper awareness and enforcement.

Prominent amongst present on the occasion included ADCs Varinder Pal Singh Bajwa, Major Amit Sareen, SDMs Balbir Raj Singh, Lal Vishwas Bains, Randeep Singh Heer, Assistant Commissioners Harjinder Jassal, Pankaj Bansal, Assistant Civil Surgeon Dr Varinder Kaur Thind and others.

Notably, currently there are nine dengue cases reported in the district. Surveillance of dengue is on across 33 hotpots in Jalandhar. One of the biggest stumbling blocks to counter dengue larvae breeding is continuously inundated streets or non-compliance of citizens in various areas. The teams often face resistance in several residential areas during challan drives. Earlier this year, security concerns were also raised regarding this. Additionally, lack of proper sewage disposal pipelines in many areas also is a cause of standing water in streets at some places.
