Bad policies to blame for Faridkot teacher's death, alleges GTU

The Government Teachers Union (GTU) today condoled the death of a newly-appointed teacher, Jaspreet Kaur, and held the state government policies responsible for the unfortunate incident.

Jaspreet, who died in an accident, was a resident of Kotkapura in Faridkot and was posted at Dharmakot block in Moga district. Expressing grief, teachers demanded adequate compensation and a government job for her family.

GTU president Sukhwinder Singh Chahal said Jaspreet Kaur fell prey to the norms of the Education Department. During the new recruitments, despite merit, teachers were posted at faraway places (from their native towns) and districts just to pester them, he alleged, claiming despite empty posts and vacancies in their own districts, handicapped, unmarried, widowed, ill teachers or mothers with small children were posted to other districts.

He said Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann used to make statements that teachers would be deputed close to their homes and those working at faraway locations would also be brought closer to their homes, but the contrary happened. Citing Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains’ statement regarding the transfer of teachers to faraway places, the union president reiterated that the minister should rectify the mistake and bring teachers closer to homes. He also demanded that empty posts in the Education Department be promptly filled and pending recruitments made.

GTU general secretary Kuldip Singh Daurka, finance secretary Amandeep Sharma and Jalandhar president Karnail Phillaur among others condoled the teachers’ tragic death.
