Nawanshahr, January 27

Under the modernisation of police forces scheme, construction of new buildings of existing 95 police stations was underway in the state and for this purpose, a loan amount of Rs 150 crore had also been availed from HUDCO, said Director General of Police Dinkar Gupta.

He was here to inaugurate the new building of the Kathgarh police station yesterday. The inaugural ceremony was also attended by MK Tiwari, managing director, Punjab Police Housing Corporation.

He said the Kathgarh police station had been constructed on a 1.75-acre land at a cost of Rs 1.85 crore. It had been converted into a model police station. It was housed in 8,000 sq-ft area as well as equipped with ultra-modern facilities for police personnel and a waiting area for the public. Besides, the whole campus has been landscaped and electrified adequately for ensuring smooth functioning of the police station.

Briefing the media about the modernisation of the police, Gupta said the state police was going to recruit over 5,000 police personnel shortly, besides technological improvement and capacity building in the police force.

Terming Punjab as the safest state in the country, he said: “Our force had successfully curbed the gangster culture in the past three years by getting extradition of dreaded gangsters from abroad. There are only three to four dreaded gangsters outside the police net, whom our teams are trying to arrest. But as Punjab is a border state, we have to remain vigilant always.”

Gupta said to curb glorification of arms and drug culture in songs, the police were committed to abide by the instructions given by the Punjab and Haryana High Court too. The police would hold meetings with singers and take appropriate action against offenders.

The DGP thanked local MLA Ch Darshan Lal Mangupur for mobilising the panchayat for making the land available for the newly built police station.
