Garhshankar police claimed to have arrested six members of an inter-district robbery gang on Friday. Two pistols, one country-made pistol, seven bullets, two live cartridges and three sharp weapons were seized.

The SSP, Sartaj Singh Chahal, said the main accused, Kulwant Singh, alias Gopa, a resident of Atal Mazara village, had earlier been an associate of gangster Ravi Balachauria. He has 10 criminal cases registered against him in different police stations of Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr and Ropar

districts and he was also announced as a proclaimed offender in some of them.

The SSP said on a tip-off, a raid was carried out by Garhshankar SHO Karnail Singh along with his team under the supervision of SP (investigation) Mukhtiar Rai and Garhshankar DSP Narinder Singh Aujla. SHO Karnail Singh had received information that some people, with illegal weapons, hiding in an unoccupied brick kiln located in Chakk Phullu village, were preparing to carry out an incident. They were planning to rob passersby and a cloth merchant at gunpoint. On the basis of the above information, the police party raided the mentioned place and arrested the accused and recovered arms from them.

A car which they stole in Ludhiana four days ago and a motorcycle which was stolen in Nawanshahr on June 23 was also recovered from them. In response to a question, the SSP said during the preliminary interrogation, the accused told that they obtained the above weapons from Uttar Pradesh, while further investigation is being done in this regard. Besides Kulwant Singh, the other accused include, Hrithik Leel, alias Abhi, of Rattewal village; Harmesh, alias Gora, of Mehndipur; Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, of Rakda Dhaha; Rishabh Kumar of Jadla; and Bhupinder Singh, alias Bhinda, of Rakra Dhaha, Nawanshahr.
