22nd anniversary of Kali Bein's 'kar sewa' tomorrow; CM to attend event

Rajya Sabha member Balbir Singh Seechewal today said Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann along with a number of religious luminaries will attend an event to mark the 22nd anniversary of the ‘kar sewa’ of the Kali Bein on July 17 here.

As many as 22 years of the ‘kar sewa’ of the Kali Bein will be completed this July. The ‘kar sewa’ at the Kali Bein began in July 2000. The story of the Kali Bein is the first instance of people’s movement in cleansing and reviving a dried water body into a now flowing rivulet. Environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal began the ‘kar sewa’ 22 years ago when the Bein, a patch of the river, was overtaken by water hyacinth and a stretch dried up in which water had stopped flowing.

The Bein, which is celebrated as a symbol of Guru Nanak’s enlightenment, now is the site of many gurdwaras and hosts many annual fairs.

Kali Bein is the holy rivulet where Guru Nanak Dev gained enlightenment after taking a dip and it came in the limelight for Seechewal’s relentless ‘kar sewa’.

The event to mark the anniversary will be held on Sunday at Gurdwara Gurparkash Sahib, on the banks of the Kali Bein, Nirmal Kutiya, Sultanpur Lodhi. The CM, religious dignitaries and other prominent individuals will attend the event and discussions will be held to make the state environment better.

A meeting in this regard was held today to review on the ongoing preparations for the event. During the meeting, environmentalist Seechewal laid stress on maintaining cleanliness on the banks of the Bein and to plant more saplings during rainy season.

Seechewal said the would address people at the event.
