2 kids injured in stray dog attacks at Sultanpur Lodhi

Almost a month after a mauled body of 32-year-old Pari Devi was found by villagers in fields at Passan Kadim village in Sultanpur Lodhi of Kapurthala district, twin dog bites cases have been reported from Ugrupur and Haidrabad Bet (also called Mehmadwal) villages. Two small kids were bitten by stray dogs at the two villages on Tuesday. The children, including one boy and a girl, were seriously injured by stray dogs.

Seven-year-old girl identified as Mira, a daughter of migrant labourers, was attacked by stray dogs in fields at Ugrupur village on Tuesday afternoon. She received multiple injuries in the attack.

In the second incident, a three-year-old boy was attacked by dogs at Haidrabad Bet village.

Notably, Ugrupur and Haidrabad Bet villages are at a distance of 13 to 14 km and 7 to 8 km, respectively, from Passan Kadim village where the woman was mauled to death by strays on February 7.

Both the kids were taken to the Sub-Divisional Hospital at Sultanpur Lodhi from where they were referred to Kapurthala hospital.

While the girl received injuries and her condition was serious, the boy was stated to be out of danger.

Sukhchain Singh, sarpanch of Ugrupur village, said, “The girl is daughter of migrant labourers. The girl was in fields when she was attacked by dogs. She received injuries on her head, legs and arms. She was taken to Sultanpur Lodhi hospital from where she was referred to Kapurthala. She is very sick.”

He said, “There are many stray dogs in the area. As the law prohibits killing of stray canine, their population is growing with each passing day posing a danger to residents. There should be adequate staff at the Sultanpur Lodhi hospital so that patients don’t have to be shifted to Kapurthala health facility during such emergencies.”

Dr Puneet Kaur, Sub-Divisional Hospital, Phillaur, said, “The two children were brought to hospital with grade four injuries. Both were referred to other hospital. The seven-year-old girl is very sick and the boy also has severe injuries, but he is out of danger.”
