Jalandhar, August 4

On Monday evening, Ranjodh Singh's (27) body was found abandoned in the fields at Reharwa village in Moga. A syringe was found near him. Hailing from Talwandi Butian village in Jalandhar, the burly 26-year-old reportedly died of drug overdose at the Reharwa.

ASI Manjit Singh at Dharamkot police station, Moga, said: “At least 10 persons — eight drug peddlers and two unidentified persons — have been booked in the case. Ranjodh had been a drug user and was previously admitted to a de-addiction centre. He was also a Kabaddi player.”

Recently out of rehab, Ranjodh was married less than a year ago. His death has shocked the village. A video of his inconsolable parents weeping helplessly alongside the body has gone viral on social media. Villagers said it was suspected he used to go to the other side of the river to get drugs.

Angrej Singh, Talwandi Butian sarpanch, said, “He had recently come out of de-addiction treatment. But he might have again been lured by some youths. We believe it is drug overdose death. The family is inconsolable. It is unfortunate that drugs are claiming our young sons.”
