Video shows Geelani’s body draped in Pak flag, FIR filed

After a video surfaced showing the body of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani wrapped in the Pakistani flag before the burial, Jammu & Kashmir Police officials said an FIR had been filed against unknown persons under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

A senior officer of the J&K Police said the Budgam police had registered an FIR under UAPA on September 2 against unknown miscreants, who allegedly raised anti-national slogans and made an attempt to place the Pakistani flag over Geelani’s body. The 92-year-old pro-Pakistan Hurriyat leader died on Wednesday evening following which there was a security clampdown and phone and Internet services in the Valley were suspended.

The video surfaced after broadband Internet and phone services were restored in Kashmir on Friday night. Mobile Internet services have again been blocked. The police have enforced restrictions to prevent gatherings. The sources said: “In the video, many people, mostly women, are seen around the body of Geelani wrapped in the Pakistani flag. There is commotion and sloganeering in the room.”

The hardline separatist was given a quiet burial before dawn on Thursday.
