Srinagar, September 17

Militants shot dead a policeman and a labourer in separate incidents in Kulgam on Friday. “At about 6.05 pm, terrorists fired at a policeman, identified as Banto Sharma of Wanpoh,” officials said.

Officials said Sharma was shifted to a hospital but succumbed to injuries. The area has been cordoned and a hunt launched to nab the attackers.

Later, at around 8.50 pm, militants struck again and killed a non-local labourer, Shankar Kumar Chowdary (35) of Bihar. He worked at a brick kiln in DH Pora area of Kulgam.

Meanwhile, political parties condemned the killing. National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah tweeted, “I unequivocally condemn the militant attack. My heartfelt condolences to the family and colleagues of Constable Bantoo Sharma of the Railway Protection Force.”

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti also took to Twitter to condemn the incident. “Very sorry to hear about the terrorist attack in Kulgam today that claimed yet another innocent life. Deepest condolences and prayers with Bantoo Sharma’s family,” she tweeted.

Peoples Conference (PC) chairman Sajad Lone stated in a tweet, “May Allah give patience to the family of Bantu Sharma to bear this loss. And may the killers rot in hell.” — PTI
