“Terrorists fired upon a non-local identified as Amritpal Singh, a resident of Amritsar at Shaheed Gunj Srinagar, who succumbed to the injuries. One more person has been grievously injured and admitted to a hospital. The area has been cordoned off,” a police spokesman said.

Soon after the incident, police officers, including Inspector General of Police Kashmir VK Birdi, rushed to the spot. The targeted attack on a non-local resident happened at a time when the government is claiming to have brought normalcy in the region.

The BJP was first to condemn the killing, terming it a cowardly and shameful act of terrorism. “It as a clear manifestation of terrorist frustration aimed at disrupting the peaceful environment and progress in Kashmir,” said senior BJP leader Manzoor Bhat.
