Srinagar, July 11

Begum Akbar Jehan had held that people were the real fountainhead of power in any working democracy and that it was the prime duty of the political class in their capacity as the servants of people to ensure their all-round development and progress.

Former Chief Minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah said this while paying tributes to Madar-e-Maharban Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah, wife of the NC founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, on her 20th death anniversary.

Party president and Member of Parliament Farooq Abdullah, while extolling her contribution towards the welfare of children, women and tribals, said the establishment of the Gujjar and Bakkarwal Advisory Board, mobile schools and dispensaries for tribals, strengthening of the Red Cross Society and the establishment of the Miskeen Bagh Education and Crafts Training Centre for Women spoke volumes about her vision.
