Srinagar, February 13

When Shahnaz Ganai joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, the BJP introduced her as a former National Conference leader.

This association with the NC evoked a strong response from the party, which countered the BJP’s assertion by stating that Dr Ganai had resigned from the party in 2019.

The NC accused the BJP of creating a perception that the NC has weakened.

The BJP wants to create a perception that the NC is getting weakened. But they have nothing to substantiate such a claim on teh ground and are spreading fake news, National Conference spokesperson Ifra Jan said.

The BJP cannot declare an election victory because they know they cannot achieve one. In this situation, they concoct an imaginary victory over the NC because that is all they can do, the NC spokeswoman said.

She said everybody has a right to choose the party of their choice, so there is no question of disagreement there.

However one shouldn't be allowed to distort the facts, she added.

Shenaz Ganai left Jammu and Kashmir National Conference on July 2019, five years back, fought an election against NC candidate afterwards and lost, she added. How can she be termed as an NC leader? she questioned.

On Monday, Shahnaz Ganai from Poonch district made headlines by officially joining the BJP in Delhi in the presence of Union Minister Jitendra Singh and MP Tarun Chugh.

The development follows the recent passage of a Bill granting Scheduled Tribe status to the Pahari ethnic tribe, who are mostly in the Pir Panjal region of Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu.
