Kathua reports first Covid-19 death, J&K’s toll rises to 96

85-year-old woman from Basohli dies of virus

Kathua district on Tuesday reported its first death due to coronavirus, taking the death toll in Jammu and Kashmir to 96.

With this, Jammu region’s death toll has gone up to 12. Kashmir Valley has recorded 84 deaths since the outbreak of Covid-19 in Jammu and Kashmir on March 8.

According to the officials, an 85-year-old woman from Basohli in Kathua district died at Government Medical College, Jammu. The woman was admitted to the hospital on June 25.

“First COVID-19 positive death of an 85-year-old woman from Basohli reported in Kathua today. She was being treated at GMC Jammu since June 25,” confirmed Deputy Commissioner Kathua OP Bhagat.

The Union Territory is in the spotlight as fatalities rose by threefold in June. The number of fatalities increased to 96 from 31. Srinagar district has reported the highest deaths — 22 — followed by 15 in Baramulla and 13 in Kulgam.

At the same time, the recovery rate of Jammu and Kashmir has also improved and it is over 64 percent. Out of the total 7,237 positive cases, 4,585 patients have recovered.
