Jammu, August 2
Eight patients died due to the Covid virus, all from Kashmir Valley, during the past 24 hours, taking the J&K toll to 396. As many as 444 new positive cases were reported in J&K and 256 patients recovered and were discharged from across the UT.
With the 444 new cases, the Covid count in J&K reached 21,416 —16,621 in Kashmir and 4,795 in Jammu.
Although the weekend lockdown has been imposed for the second successive week, Jammu, Udhampur and Rajouri witnessed a surge in cases. During the past 24 hours, the single-day highest ever 69 cases were reported from Udhampur followed by 65 in Jammu.
Reports said 50 troopers from the BSF Academy, Udhampur, 12 Sub-Inspector from the Sher-e-Kashmir Police Academy, were among those who tested positive in Udhampur. Similarly, 13 CRPF personnel also tested positive, on late Saturday evening, from the campus which was already sealed by the authorities. Similarly, the BSF Academy from where 50 persons tested positive was already declared as a red zone.
Among 444 new positive cases, 84 were travellers. Out of the total 21,416 cases, 7,893 are active positive cases.
Out of the total 7,893 active positive cases, 2,045 are in Jammu province and 5,848 in the Kashmir valley.
