J-K: Delimitation Commission to meet March ’22 deadline

New Delhi, July 5

The Delimitation Commission will not “miss the deadline” given to it to delimit parliamentary and Assembly constituencies in Jammu & Kashmir, sources said today. The whole process was expected to be completed by March 2022, sources said.

The confidence among the members, including its chairperson Ranjana Desai, to complete the process in time is due to the positive indications given by local political leaders after their meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 24, the sources said. The other two members of the panel are Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra and J&K Election Commissioner KK Sharma.

There would be four basic tenets for delimiting the constituencies — physical features, existing boundaries of administrative units, facilities of communication and public convenience, they said.

During its visit to J&K beginning on Tuesday, the commission will meet representatives of political parties, public representatives and officials of 20 districts of the UT. The commission will first visit Srinagar and then Jammu. — TNS
