The Administrative Council on Friday accorded approval to the establishment of a government medical college in Udhampur which will come up by 2024-25.
Chaired by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the meeting was attended by his Adviser Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta and Principal Secretary Nitishwar Kumar.
Earlier, the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, under its centrally sponsored scheme, had sanctioned two new medical colleges in Kupwara and Udhampur, each costing Rs 325 crore.
“The upcoming medical college in Udhampur will improve the doctor-patient ratio in Jammu and Kashmir as the intake capacity of MBBS students will increase by 100 seats. This will bring improvement in medical services in the region,” said an official spokesperson.
He said availability of quality medical services at the district headquarters would also reduce the response time for medical emergencies, minimise inconvenience and increase the life expectancy.
This will provide sectoral expertise to the nursing colleges, a spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, the council also approved the J&K Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Rules-2022 under the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act-2019. The Act provides a comprehensive mechanism to ban the unregulated deposits and to protect the interests of depositors.
The Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act-2019 puts a ban on the promotion, operation and advertisement of unregulated deposit schemes which lead to fraudulent default in the repayment, return of deposit amount on maturity.

The Administrative Council has approved the J&K Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Rules-2022 to protect the interests of depositors, prohibiting unregulated deposit schemes.
