Five die, 11 hurt in Ramban accident

Five persons lost their lives and 11 others sustained injuries in a major accident near Kela Morh in Ramban district of Jammu division late on Thursday. The incident occurred on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

The accident took place when a tempo traveller (JK02AP5338) ferrying 16 persons hit an Alto car on a sharp curve and rolled into a deep gorge. The driver of the tempo reportedly was not able to negotiate the curve.

Ramban Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohita Sharma said five persons were killed and 11 injured in the accident.

“Five injured were referred to the Government Medical College (GMC) in Srinagar and six to GMC, Jammu,” the SSP said. The vehicle was on its way to Jammu from Srinagar. Soon after the police were informed about the incident, a Quick Response Team (QRT) was deployed to rescue the passengers. Locals and passersby helped them in getting them to the main road. Four bodies were recovered from the accident site, while another person died on way to the hospital.

Deputy Commissioner Mussarat Islam visited the Ramban district hospital, where the injured were initially treated upon.

Many areas on the National Highway have witnessed accidents in the recent past, especially during the evening. The police have registered a case under relevant sections. Meanwhile, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha in a tweet said: “Deeply pained by the road accident near Kela Morh, Ramban. In this hour of grief, I convey my condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest. Directed officials concerned to provide best possible treatment to the injured.”
