Jammu, February 12

Three teenage sisters were killed in a fire at their house in a remote village in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district on Monday.

The incident took place at Tajnihal village in Ramsoo subdivision of the district.

The deceased have been identified as Saniya Banoo (11), Bisma Banooand (18) and Saika Banoo (14), daughters of Abdul Latief Lone.

A police official informed that the incident took place at around 2 am. The three girls were sleeping in one room and were unable to escape as the fire had engulfed the house.

The police have started investigation into the incident after registering an FIR.

Neighbours of Latief said that a gas cylinder explosion also took place after fire broke out at the site. The house with tin roof caught fire which immediately spread due to wooden work inside. Locals gathered as soon as fire was detected by them and tried to douse it with buckets of water. Locals alleged that the emergency services took a lot of time to reach due to remoteness of the village.

Abdul Latief is left with two sons and a daughter. The three victims were sleeping on the second floor of the house which was completely damaged due to fire. Abdul Latief along with his wife and three other children were reportedly sleeping on the ground floor due to which they were able to escape.

The district administration has announced Rs 3 lakh compensation for the family.

Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, Baseer-ul-Haq expressed his grief over the incident and said an immediate relief of Rs 3 lakh will be extended to the bereaved family under the Red Cross fund.

“We stand with the family and will be providing full support and compensation as per SDRF norms,” the DC said.

Bodies of the three sisters were found by personnel of the fire and emergency services. Cause of the fire was being ascertained.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh in a post on X said, “Just now spoke to Ramban DC after learning about the unfortunate fire incident in Ramsoo area of district Ramban in which three lives were lost. My condolences to the bereaved family. I’m in constant touch with administration. All kind of possible assistance being provided to the affected.”
